2026–2027 military relocation · San Antonio
San Antonio BAH is a starting input, not a house budget.
Basic Allowance for Housing changes by duty location, year, pay grade and dependency status. Use the official DoD rate first, then compare it with your real monthly housing costs and PCS timeline.
The short answer
Start with the rule that controls the decision.
The Defense Travel Management Office says BAH is housing compensation based on local civilian housing costs and is not intended to cover every service member’s full housing expense. Look up the current rate for your status, then build a separate housing budget around the property and your assignment.
Official rate
Use the DoD lookup, not a screenshot.
Rates and entitlement details can change. Check the Defense Travel Management Office directly for the correct year, location, pay grade and dependency status.

Separate allowance from affordability.
Rent or principal and interest are only part of a housing decision. Depending on the property, compare taxes, insurance, HOA dues, utilities, maintenance, commuting, reserves, closing costs and the chance that your assignment timing changes.
PCS timing
Do not force the purchase because the clock is running.
Temporary lodging, on-base housing, renting or buying can each make sense under different report dates and household constraints. Use the arrival window to choose the sequence rather than treating a fast purchase as the default.
