2026–2027 military relocation · San Antonio

On base or off base at JBSA?

There is no universal winner. The better option depends on availability, report date, duty location, commute, household needs, assignment length, budget and how much flexibility you need.

The short answer

Start with the rule that controls the decision.

JBSA currently tells service members to report to the housing office at the assigned installation upon arrival for counseling and guidance before entering a written lease or rental/sales contract. Start there, then compare on-base and off-base options using the same decision categories.

Start official

Ask JBSA Housing before committing.

Availability, policies and contacts can change. Use current JBSA Housing guidance rather than assumptions from another duty station.

Compare

Use the same categories on both sides.

CommuteWorksite, gate, report time and backup route.
TimingAvailability, temporary lodging, move-in date, lease or closing schedule.
CostAllowance, rent or mortgage, utilities, taxes, insurance, HOA and maintenance.
FlexibilityAssignment uncertainty, lease terms, potential resale or rental decisions.

Off base

Map the worksite before the neighborhood.

JBSA-Lackland, Fort Sam Houston and Randolph produce different commute maps. An area that is convenient for one assignment can create unnecessary daily travel for another.

Decision quality

Do not use BAH as the only filter.

BAH is a housing allowance, not a recommendation about what to spend or where to live. Compare actual cash flow and household priorities independently.
